Summary
Picture frame for oil painting on panel, Jane Seymour (c.1509 –1537), after Hans Holbein the younger (Augsburg 1497/8 - London 1543), 16th century after an original of 1536. This sort of frame was once very common, and was only gradually supplanted by the taste for carved and gilt frames. It retains traces of the original hanging holes at top centre, not visible to the spectator, and would originally have been hung from a ribbon or cord threaded through the holes. (Jacob Simon, A Guide to Picture Frames at Knole, Kent, NPG website) First half sixteenth century, possibly genuine. Early renaissance type frame with gilt corner on oak (P. Levi, 1988)
