Summary
Flat painted wooden panels forming a frieze in the Cartoon Gallery. Panels are probable replacements for canvas paintings on the south wall, date unknown. South wall, upper panel, second from left.
Full description
Painted panel on wood. Gold framed, blue cartouche with nude female figure pouring liquid from a jug or ewer in her right hand into a small bowl held in her left hand. Below, a large grotesque horned face with orange/red eyes and large clamshell ears. Above the cartouche, a decorative canvas strip forming an insect-like body, attached to panel. Surrounded by foliate scrolls in gold, red and blue.
Provenance
Painted frieze probably dates from 1608 - 1627 when Paul Isaakson was working at Knole. Later additions and repairs may have altered the original scheme, with some newer panels being added by Houderoy, working in the Cartoon Gallery in 1723. The flat painted panels are likely to be repairs or replacements for the canvas paintings.
