Full description
Painted panel on wood. Canine or ursine face above a red framed cartouche of a nude male figure with flowing hair, his right arm encircling a large staff or pillar. Surrounded by foliate scrolls.
Provenance
Painted frieze probably dates from 1608 - 1627 when Paul Isaakson was working at Knole. Later additions and repairs may have altered the original scheme, with some newer panels being added by Houderoy, working in the Cartoon Gallery in 1723. The flat painted panels are likely to be later repairs or replacements for canvas paintings.
