Summary
An argillite carved pipe made by the Haida Indians from Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia. Argillite is a dense black shale composed of fine mineral clay and carbon, modified by heat. The pipe was carved using woodworking tools and depicts human and animal heads terminating in an eagle. These pipe were sold as souvenirs and presented to honoured guests and not used as pipes. Collected in 1902. Part of Lord Egerton's collection of ethnographic objects once displayed in the Tenants' Hall.
