State Coaches were used for high status occasions such as the opening of parliament or for coronatiions. They are eyecatching elegant carriages sprung high on C springs and are usually painted in bright yellow or red finished off with a fine hammer cloth on the coachmans seat. This State Coach was last used at the Coronation of George VI in 1911.

Summary

State Coach built circa 1840 by McNaught and Co. of London. State Coach (four wheels) for a pair or team of horses. A typical 19th century state coach on perch carriage sprung with C and under springs. The hammercloth seat is on a Salisbury Boot. This carriage has a footman’s cushion and hind standards. Upholstered in maroon morocco leather with red silk taffeta curtains and drab wool cloth. Lower body panels are yellow with black framing and thin red lining. Wheels and carriage parts orange/red with broad black strip and two fine yellow lines.
