Summary
An Axminster hand tufted carpet, early 19th Century. Fawn ground, two tone brown pattern with foliate and sun ray centre, star and leaf bands, diamond corner decoration, with signs of the Zodiac. Designed by Lewis Wyatt for the Library circa 1812 and is only one third of its original size, the remainder being no longer in existence. Depicts the winter months' signs of the Zodiac from September to March (clockwise on carpet - Scorpio, Libra, Pisces, Aquarius, Saggitarius and Capricorn). An 1820 watercolour view of the Library by J.C. Buckler shows the whole carpet in place.
