Full description
English percussion sporting gun signed Manton, c1830. This rifle was used by G.E. Robinson, Tatton Game-keeper from 1903 onwards (died 1953). Damascus twist iron barrel constructed in 2 stages, octagonal at the breech, then round to the muzzle and with an under-rib with 2 ramrod pipes. The breech inlaid with a gold line (part missing). Bead fore-sight; the engraved barrel tang of extended form. Nipple and breech with much ware and some damage. Retained to the stock by 2 barrel slides. Wooden ramrod with brass tip. Barrel length 77.2cm. Calibre 17.5mm. Walnut half stock, with a chequered wrist. Engraved iron furniture comprising; butt plate, trigger guard, and 1 rear ramrod pipe. Silver fore-end cap and escutcheon to the wrist. Percussion back-action lock, with dog engraving and signed MANTON. Inverted C-shaped hammer with dolphin form top (damaged). Retained to the stock by 2 side-nails. Overall length: 115.7cm
