Full description
Krag-Jorgensen bolt-action magazine rifle, Model 1894, produced at the Small Arms Factory, Steyr, Austria in1896. Developed in Norway in the 1880s by Colonel Ole Krag and Eric Jorgensen of the Kongsberg Arsenal, Norway, the rifle was adopted by Denmark in 1889 and briefly by America in 1892 where it saw action in the Cuban conflict of 1898. Some Krag-Jorgensen rifles were used by the Boers and it is most probable that this example is a war trophy from this conflict, although there is no evidence on the gun to prove this. Round steel barrel, rifled, with adjustable blade fore-sight and calibrated rear ramp sight. The muzzle with a bayonet mount. Retained to the stock by 2 steel barrel bands (each marked 132) with integral sling swivel. Steel cleaning rod. Barrel length 76.5cm. Calibre 6.5mm. Wooden full stock, formed with pistol grip, the butt with sling swivel, and stamped with 132 M under a crown. Steel butt-plate with hinged trap, marked 132. Separate wooden hand guard to upper breech. Steel receiver with bolt-action breech, the breech marked STEYR 1896 and the serial No 132. Side-loading fixed magazine with hinged cover. Removable side-plate to left side. Safety catch to left side of the bolt. Overall length: 127cm
