Full description
Caucasian miquelet lock musket, c1800. Octagonal iron barrel with traces of silver nielloed decoration, the muzzle of a slightly swollen form. The breech form with a raised ramp with a peep-hole sight; the fore-sight missing. The breech struck with a makers mark. The barrel tang with very fine silver nielloed decoration. Retained to the stock by 3 barrel bands each with nielloed decoration. Iron ramrod. Barrel length 48.5cm. Calibre 15mm. Figured wooden full stock (probably Circassian walnut), the butt of straight polyogonal form with a pronounced step behind the breech. The butt profusely inlaid with silver discs containing stained bone pellets in a geometrical design; also inlaid with bone (some with green staining) and mother-of-pearl banding together with small nail heads – this decoration extending to beyond the lockplate. Bone butt-plate. The tip of the forestock with a horn fore-end cap and inlaid with silver discs and nail heads. THe forestock also slotted for a attaching a sling. Button-form iron trigger. Large miquelet lock of typical form, profusely covered with nielloed decoration. The cock with a ring-head jaw screw. Retained to the stock by 2 side-nails. Overall length: 112.5cm
