Full description
English sporting gun by John Manton & Son, Dover Street, London. The serial number 6448 dates the gun to 1817 and was built as a flintlock. The gun was probably converted to the percussion system during c1820s. The iron barrel of 3 stage Damascus twist construction, octagonal at the breech, becoming 16 sided, then round at the muzzle, and with an under-rib and 2 ramrod pipes. The breech and barrel tang with foliate engraving and constructed with a platinum safety vent. The barrel signed, JOHN MANTON & SON (in script), DOVER STREET. Bead fore-sight. Retained to the stock by 2 barrel slides with silver escutcheons. Horn fore-end cap. Wooden ramrod with brass tip. Barrel length 81.3cm. Calibre 18mm. Walnut half stock, with a chequered wrist. Engraved iron furniture comprising; butt plate, trigger guard with pinapple finial and engraved on the tang with the serial No 6448, and 1 rear ramrod pipe. Silver escutcheon to the wrist. Large curved iron trigger. Percussion lock, the plate with squared tail, finely engraved overall and signed MANTON PATENT (in script). Retained to the stock by 1 side-nail. The hammer spur missing. Overall length: 121cm.
