Summary
One of a pair of 16th century wrought iron and steel andirons with arms of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn in brass beneath a steel coronet. The tapering hexagonal uprights rising from an arched foot infilled with gothic cusping and carrying a pear shaped pendant filled with pierced steel and a pair of figures representing Adam and Eve. Brought to Knole from Hever Castle in early 19th century (see Bridgman's Guidebook of 1817). Almost certainly made by the Royal Locksmith, Henry Romayne. Royal invoice extant (see Scotney archive).
