Summary
One of four English walnut footstools, c.1680, the rear legs of which are larger than the front and joined by two turned side and one central stretcher. This one is covered in red velvet with tassel fringe en suite with the winged elbow chair upholstered by Richard Bealing for Queen Mary II, equally in the Brown Gallery at Knole (NT 129425). Another one is upholstered in blue silk damask (NT 129426.2) and another two in grey silk (NT 129426.3-4).
Provenance
Possibly a perquisite of office acquired by Charles Sackville, 6th Earl of Dorset in his capacity of Lord Chamberlain to William III. Knole and the majority of its furniture were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust in 1946.
