Summary
Coloured chalks on paper, Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (London 1828 - Birchington 1882), 1877. A head and shoulders portrait drawing of a woman wearing a head-dress of dark material falling to her shoulders. This intense portrait study of his sister depicts a mature Christina Rossetti. The portrait is a departure from Rossetti's usual style with the use of a muted colour palette and the demure, averted gaze of the sitter. The drawing belonged to Christina Rossetti's brother, William Michael Rossetti and then, by descent, to his daughter Helen Rossetti Angeli (according to the labels on the reverse).
