Summary
Watercolour and bodycolour on paper, Bulcroft Church East Window by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co.(Morris & Co.) (1861-1940); after William Morris (Walthamstow 1834 - Hammersmith 1896) and possibly Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (Birmingham 1833 - London 1898), 1870. Inscribed 'East Window Bulcroft Church, Darlaston Aug 2nd. 1870 The property of Morris + Company 26 Queen Square Bloomsbury'. Also inscribed with illegible faint pencil note across bottom. A stained glass window design for the East window of Bulcroft Church, Darlaston. Three lights each depicting groups of saints. The centre full-length light depicts a group of three figures above a group of four figures with a single saint at the top. Background detail of circular design depicting heads. The two lights either side depict two groups of two figures each with a single angel at the top, with a plainer green background. Two small quatrefoils above each depicting an angel. 'Bulcroft' is thought to be All Saint's Church, Darlaston, though its unclear when/if the name changed. The Church was built by George Edmund Street in 1872, and is described as having windows by Burne Jones. The Church and windows were destroyed in the Second World War, when a bomb hit in 31 July 1942. The figures were likely designed by the studio of Burne-Jones; the backgrounds and foliage were designed by Morris.
