Summary
Watercolour and bodycolour on paper, Kings Bromley Church Chancel Window by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co.(Morris & Co.) (1861-1940); after William Morris (Walthamstow 1834 - Hammersmith 1896) and possibly Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (Birmingham 1833 - London 1898), c.1869. Inscribed 'Kings Bromley Lichfield Design for Chancel window The property of Morris + Company. 26 Queen Square, Bloomsbury'. Also inscribed in faint pencil '48 - old glass [row a ruby ...] on white ground'. A stained glass window design for the Chancel window of Kings Bromley Church, Lichfield. Two lights each depicting a saint. In the left light the figure (St Peter) is holding a large key, in the right light the figure (St John) is holding a goblet with a small dragon escaping from it. Banner section below each reading 'Petrv' and 'Johanne'. Diamond background with floral sprig detail. Irregular diamond light above with initials 'l h s'. Handwritten on reverse of mount 'Colonel H B Lane [L.l] Hill Bracknell Berks'. The figures were likely designed by the studio of Burne-Jones; the backgrounds and foliage were designed by Morris. Kings Bromley is now known as All Saints Church in Burton on Trent, Staffordshire. The Church still has the Chancel South West window made by Morris & Co in its original location. The window was created and installed in 1869, which would have been an early work for Morris and Co. Depicted are St Peter and St John. The Church was Grade I listed in 1964.It was previously thought the window was designed/installed in 1887, though information provided by the Church archive shows it was commissioned as a memoriam for John Newton Lane (d. 1869) by his widow and children in 1869 (updated 2024).
