Summary

Watercolour and bodycolour on paper, Brampton Church North Aisle Western Window by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co.(Morris & Co.) (1861-1940); after William Morris (Walthamstow 1834 - Hammersmith 1896) and possibly Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (Birmingham 1833 - London 1898), 1878. Inscribed 'Westernmost window of North aisle of Nave. Window No. 2 (see Mr Webbs' letter Oct 24. '79) Brampton Church Cumberland Half Inch Scale The property of Morris & Co. 26 Queen Square, Bloomsbury. Jan 19. 1878'. Also inscribed with faint illegible pencil notes. A stained glass window design for the Westernmost window of the North aisle of the Nave of Brampton Church, Cumberland. Two lights depicting the four saints, Adam with a spade, Noah with an ark, Enoch holding the hand of God, and Abraham with armour and sword, with their names below. Diamond background with floral spring detail. Quatrefoil in centre above depicting Adam and Eve, the Fall of Man; three figures around a tree with leaves. Drawn at a scale of 1/2 inch = 1 foot. The figures were likely designed by the studio of Burne-Jones; the backgrounds and foliage were designed by Morris. Philip Webb was the designer of St Martin's Church, Brampton, Cumbria, built in 1878, replacing an earlier church built in 1828. It is the only Church Webb designed. The North aisle West window commemorates Joseph Coulthard, the first headmaster of Brampton National School. The window was installed in 1878 and still exists in situ in 2014.
