Summary
Watercolour and bodycolour on paper, Jesus College Chapel South East Window by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co.(Morris & Co.) (1861-1940); after William Morris (Walthamstow 1834 - Hammersmith 1896) and possibly Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (Birmingham 1833 - London 1898), circa 1860 - 1890. Inscribed 'Design for the S.E. Window S. Trans. Jesus Coll. Chapel, Cambridge. May 18th 1872 "1/2=1 foot [The] property of Morris +Co 26 Queen Sqr. Bloomsbury'. Handwritten in black ink bottom right corner of mount 'William Morris'. A stained glass window design for the South East Window of the South transcept of Jesus College Chapel, Cambridge. Three lights each depicting a saint, with a banner, a smaller group portrait scene and a smaller banner beneath. Green foliage design background to sections. Design for Y-tracery between the lights with two curved triangles. Drawn at a scale of 1/2 inch = 1 foot. The figures were likely designed by the studio of Burne-Jones; the backgrounds and foliage were designed by Morris. William Morris designed the decorations for the newly-panelled ceilings of the nave and the tower, which were painted under his direction in 1867. The windows in the nave and transepts of the chapel were glazed by Morris and Company between 1873 and 1877, using designs by Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox Brown.
