Caption
As we view this image of the sculptor Thomas Woolner (1825–92) working in his studio on a marble bust of the poet Lord Tennyson (1809– 92), our awareness gradually expands to take in the busts lining the shelves behind him. They give the humorous impression that they too are intently observing the artist at work. What might Cardinal John Newman (1801–90), third from the left on the bottom shelf, or Lord Lawrence (1811–79) and Charles Darwin (1809–82) beside him, have made of Woolner’s efforts? Joseph Parkin Mayall ran a prestigious photography studio in Park Lane, London, and was commissioned to produce a series of photographs of artists in their homes. However, it was Mayall’s assistant Frank Dudman who took this photograph of Woolner, a founding member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The photograph belonged to Lady Rosalie Mander (1905–88), a writer with a passionate interest in and knowledge of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, represented by over 70 works in the collection at Wightwick Manor.
