Summary
A pale oak rocking chair, British, late 19th century, probably Morris & Co., with five shaped and graduated horizontal back splats, between two turned uprights, the shaped armrests on tapering angled supports which pierce the rush seat and extend down to join a stretcher, the seat on four turned legs joining a pair of curved rockers, a stretcher between the legs on either side, a cross stretcher joined between these which the armrest supports join, a single stretcher between the rear legs.
Provenance
In 1937 Sir Geoffrey Mander and his wife Rosalie gifted Wightwick Manor, its contents and gardens to the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey and his family continued to occupy and manage Wightwick adding to the collection in collaboration with the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey died in 1962 but Lady Mander continued to live at Wightwick until her death in 1988. This chair was transferred to the National Trust on the death of Lady Mander in 1988.
