Carved oak, The Theodore Watts-Dunton Cabinet:The Rose Garden, carving by Thomas Keynes, circa 1896-98.The pen and brown ink and pencil drawing of 1860-61 (Surtees No. 125, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston) was a design for the proposed title page of Rossetti's translation of The Early Italian Poets to be etched on copper. Some prints were taken from a zinc plate but it was not used for the book. The carving has the composition of the drawing reversed, as it would be on the plate.
