Carved oak, The Theodore Watts-Dunton Cabinet: Astarte Syriaca, carving by Thomas Keynes, circa 1896-98. From the oil painting of 1877 (Surtees No. 249 Manchester City Art Gallery). The subject is the Syrian goddess of love Astarte, the equivalent of the Greek Aphrodite and the Roman Venus. Watts-Dunton, was interested in Eastern mythology. Jane Morris was the model for the painting.
