Summary
A mahogany and marquetry linen press, British, circa 1890, in the manner of Edwards & Roberts, with swan neck pediment, each pediment with marquetry inlay and each end applied with a roundel, with dentil moulding to the cornice and lines of satinwood stringing below, a pair of cupboard doors with crossbanded edges and each applied with a moulded canted rectangle enclosing a panel with satinwood stringing, a floral and foliate swag with a torch and quiver suspended on a ribbon, the cupboard doors enclosing two stray shelves, below the doors are two short and two long drawers, all drawers with crossbanding and scrolling foliate marquetry, brass oval backplates and handles, on shaped bracket feet.
Provenance
In 1937 Sir Geoffrey Mander and his wife Rosalie gifted Wightwick Manor, its contents and gardens to the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey and his family continued to occupy and manage Wightwick adding to the collection in collaboration with the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey died in 1962 but Lady Mander continued to live at Wightwick until her death in 1988. This linen press is listed in the Wightwick Manor 1937 inventory.
