Summary
A yew and elm triple-splat Windsor chair, Thames Valley, probably Prior Family Workshop, possibly Robert Prior, early 19th century, the bow-back enclosing three shaped and pierced splats centred with roundels, each splat separated by a vertical spindle, the elm saddle seat supported on four turned and tapering splayed legs joined by a crinoline-stretcher. The Prior family situated in Middlesex in the Thames Valley were well regarded chair makers throughout the second half of the 18th century until the third quarter of the 19th century Dr. Bernard Cotton's 'The English Regional Chair', 1990, pp. 78-80, illustrates two very similar models of this chair, one being stamped Robert Prior Maker on the side of the seat.
