Summary
A set of eighteen mahogany dining chairs, comprising two armchairs and sixteen single chairs, British, of Queen Anne style, manufactured and retailed by Morris & Co., circa 1880, each chair with a curved top rail above a shaped backsplat, the armchairs with curved armrests and shaped supports, the drop-in seat covered in brown morocco leather, the seat rail with moulding to the top edge, with cabriole legs terminating in pad feet to the front and straight legs with small pads to the rear. These chairs bear similarities but are not identical to examples of Queen Anne reproduction chairs advertised by Morris & Co. in their 1912 catalogue 'Specimens of Upholstered Furniture'.
Provenance
In 1937 Sir Geoffrey Mander and his wife Rosalie gifted Wightwick Manor, its contents and gardens to the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey and his family continued to occupy and manage Wightwick adding to the collection in collaboration with the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey died in 1962 but Lady Mander continued to live at Wightwick until her death in 1988. Sixteen of the chairs are listed in the Wightwick Manor 1937 inventory.
