Summary
A full-size mahogany billiard table, London, 1885, manufactured by Thurston & Co. Ltd. : Green baized top with six leather-trimmed, string pockets, the projecting and shaped frieze applied with moulded roundels, the apron with reeded lower rims and large corner blocks applied with raised panels, two further rectangular blocks with raised panels to the long sides, the blocks mounted atop the eight thick turned legs, one short end of the frieze applied with an ivorine label reading 'THURSTON & COMPY Manufacturers BY APPOINTMENT TO HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN & HRH THE PRINCE OF WALES 14 CATHERINE STREET. STRAND. W.C.6. LONDON' , opposite short end of the frieze applied with an ivorine label reading 'THE NEW "THURSTONIC" CUSHION (Patented) / By Appointment to H.M. King George V. / THURSTON & Co. Ltd. LONDON.' This table was moved from the original one-storey Billiard Room which was demolished when the house was extended in 1893 and is shown in its current position in a photograph dating to the 1890s. Under both long edges of the cushions, the name T HARRY is impressed into the wood. Underneath the right-hand edge of the cushion section,when looking from the doorway, is an adhesive label with ' ? of 32006 G.Le.M. Mander Esq Wolverhampton'. Together with a scoreboard (1288230.2), billiard balls (1288230.3), billiard cues (1288230.4), billiard cue racks (1288230.5 &.6). This billiard table and its accessories are listed in the Wightwick Manor 1937 inventory.
Provenance
In 1937 Sir Geoffrey Mander and his wife Rosalie gifted Wightwick Manor, its contents and gardens to the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey and his family continued to occupy and manage Wightwick adding to the collection in collaboration with the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey died in 1962 but Lady Mander continued to live at Wightwick until her death in 1988. This billiard table and its accessories are listed in the Wightwick Manor 1937 inventory.
