Summary
A mahogany and marquetry bombe commode, North Italian, 19th century, the shaped top with serpentine front, canted front corners and moulded rims, the top surface with marquetry inlay, with three graduated drawers, the lowest one with dipped apron, the drawer fronts with marquetry inlay depicting hunting scenes, each drawer with two brass lion mask handles, the commode with canted front corners extending down to form flat splayed legs and feet, the surface with floral and foliate marquetry, plain splayed feet to the rear, the curved sides with further marquetry hunting scenes.
Provenance
In 1937 Sir Geoffrey Mander and his wife Rosalie gifted Wightwick Manor, its contents and gardens to the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey and his family continued to occupy and manage Wightwick adding to the collection in collaboration with the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey died in 1962 but Lady Mander continued to live at Wightwick until her death in 1988. This commode is listed in the Wightwick Manor 1937 inventory.
