Full description

Pen and ink drawing on paper, Strensham Mill, Worcestershire by Alfred William Parsons RA (Beckington 1847 - Broadway 1920), signed with monogram and 1892. Parsons was very successful as an illustrator. This drawing is one of his numerous book illustrations. The subject is for The Warwickshire Avon (page 130) by A.T. Quiller-Couch, published in 1892. It shows his very considerable skill as a draughtsman, especially in the use of soft-toned pencil. Other books illustrated by Parsons are W. Robinson's God's Acre Beautiful (1880) and The Wild Garden (3rd edition 1883); Poetry of Robert Herrick (1882); R.D. Blackmore's Springham (1888); Old Songs (1889); Sonnets of William Wordsworth (1891); F.D. Millet's The Danube (1892); his own Notes in Japan (1896); and Andrew Lang's Wordsworth (1897). His extensive magazine work included contributions to The English Illustrated Magazine 1883-6 and 1891-2, The Quiet Life 1890, Harper's Monthly Magazine 1891-2 and The Daily Chronicle 1895.
