Summary
Print, lithograph, The Anti Corn Law League - Richard Cobden MP (1804-1865), John Bright MP (1811-1889) and Charles Pelham Villiers MP (1802-1898) by E. Hulme. The Corn Laws were import tariffs designed to protect grain prices in the United Kingdom against competition from less expensive foreign imports between 1815 and 1846. The Anti-Corn Law League, founded in 1838, agitated for repeal. On 15 May, 1846, MPs voted 327 votes to 229 to repeal the Corn Laws. On 25 June the Duke of Wellington persuaded the House of Lords to pass it.
