Summary
Watercolour on paper, View over Florence by John Roddam Spencer-Stanhope (Cannon Hall 1829 - Florence 1908), circa 1890. A small watercolour looking over trees to the dome of Florence Cathedral and the Campanelli. Spencer Stanhope suffered from asthma, and from 1880 lived permanently at the Villa Nuti at Bellosguardo near Florence, which he had bought in 1873. This view of the famous skyline of Florence, dominated by the Duomo, probably dates from his long residence in Italy. He was visited there by his nieces the artists Wilfreda and Gertrude Spencer Stanhope (q.v. WILFREDA J. SPENCER STANHOPE portrait of Gertrude Spencer Stanhope WIG/ P/ 34) and Evelyn Pickering, later Mrs. William De Morgan.
