Summary
Watercolour drawing, The s.s. Manitoba and the s.s. City of Rome race across the Atlantic by Charles Edward Dixon (Goring 1872 – West Sussex 1934), signed and dated 1894. A large watercolour seascape, in the foreground are two liners the 'City of Rome' and the 'Manitoba'. This is a highly accomplished early work by Dixon, showing his characteristic accuracy of detail combined with skilled use of colour and washes to create atmosphere. He was among the finest late 19th and early 20th century marine artists, working mainly in watercolour. The son of the artist Alfred Dixon, he first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1889. Dixon was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour 1900. He showed extensively at the leading galleries and exhibitions including the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Fine Arts Society. As an illustrator he worked extensively for The Graphic 1900-1910, and also illustrated Britannia's Bulwark's by C.N. Robinson (1901).
