Summary
Watercolour on paper, The Nunnery Garden by Beatrice Parsons (London 1870-1955), signed 1930. A view sunny garden with a nun walking up a pathway flanked by orange trees and pink roses, with crucifix to right. Parsons also painted gardens in the south of France, Capri and Algiers. The strong light and exotic profusion of flowers in this picture suggests that it is one of these. The convent setting and figure of the nun give the picture an extra interest by suggesting a glimpse into a private, literally enclosed world. Parsons' technique of concentrating on botanical detail in the foreground with more loosely painted backgrounds can be clearly seen. White mount, wash border; glazed in narrow giltwood frame.
