Summary
A Burberry macintosh, Bernard Shaw's motoring coat. Wrap around collar, internal pockets accessed by buttoned slits. Two buttons to hold sides closed. Three buttons to collar fastening. Lined with green, brown and cream check. Grease marks on sleeves. Cuffs can be sealed with pop studs. A Burberry weatherproof macintosh belonging to Bernard Shaw, in use from the early 1920s onwards, and used by Shaw as a driving coat. A photograph of Shaw dressed for motoring wearing the driving coat and his Burberry cap survives (NT Shaw Photographs 1715211.28). The Burberry driving cap remains in the collection (NT 1275332); and a pair of gaiters (NT 1275336). The driving coat has been extensively repaired: several heavily stitched repairs to tears in the fabric are evident. An invoice from Burberry’s for ‘cleaning, reproofing and relining’ the coat is at LSE. (Shaw Business Papers 25/8, f.38, dated 16 April 1946).
