Summary
A Burberry weatherproof driving cap belonging to Bernard Shaw, formed of 8 segments. Ear flaps with 3 press studs; red and brown checked lining. Worn from the 1920s onwards, and used by Shaw as a driving cap. A photograph of Shaw dressed for motoring wearing his Burberry cap and coat survives (NT Shaw Photographs 1715211.28). The Burberry driving coat remains in the collection (NT 1275436); and a pair of gaiters (NT 1275336).
Provenance
The Shaw Collection. The house and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by George Bernard Shaw in 1950, together with Shaw's photographic archive.
