Summary
Plaster plaque of Bernard Shaw as Aristophanes, by Rosie Banks Danecourt. There are elements of Aristophanic comedy in Shaw’s plays, and in 1933 his friend Gilbert Murray had dedicated his work Aristophanes to Shaw. A full-length figure in high-relief, Shaw has a flowing beard and shoulder length hair, and wears a toga and sandals. He holds a scroll in his left hand. Textured off-white background, raised gilded edging studded with coloured glass balls. At top right "G.B.S." within rectangle and "Aristophanes" below. Wire hanging loop on back.
Provenance
The Shaw Collection. The house and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by George Bernard Shaw in 1950, together with Shaw's photographic archive.
