Caption
Shaw is known to have purchased Goodman’s watercolours from exhibitions at the Leicester Galleries in January 1905 and June 1906. Dated 1904/05 this watercolour is probably no.43 from the 1905 sale, listed as ‘The Taj Mahal – from the Fort Agra’.
Summary
Watercolour on paper, The Taj Mahal from Agra Fort by Robert Gwelo Goodman (South Africa 1871-1939), signed bottom left in red watercolour paint 1904/05. View from terrace through portico with hexagonal columns, pierced balustrade and elaborately painted roof. Valley with river and beyond it a white domed palace with red building in front of it. Set off-centre to left in wooden plaque and cornice; opening framed and glazed.
