Summary
An imitation bamboo stick with opaque green globe knob mounted in silver with engraved inscription. Of Scandinavian origin. Possibly a gift from William Morris or May Morris to Bernard Shaw. Following her father’s death in 1896, May Morris gave various friends several of her father’s possessions. William Morris visited Iceland during the 1870s.
Provenance
The Shaw Collection. The house and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by George Bernard Shaw in 1950, together with Shaw's photographic archive.
Marks and inscriptions
"August 15th. 1882 foe do Froeder do Selv dor jeg higesaa Et jeg ved som aldrig dor; Dommen over huer en Dod" A translation reads; "Animals die, friends and relations die, I shall also die, but one thing that will never die is the verdict on a dead man."
