Summary
A chromolithograph after a work by Andrea Mantegna (1431-1506) of St James the Greater before Herod Agrippa, part of the fresco at the church of Eremitani, Padua. Published by the Arundel Society after the watercolour copy made by Cesari Mariannecci. The original fresco by Mantegna in the Ovetari Chapel, church of Eremitani, Padua, was destroyed during World War Two.Herod is shown on the throne to the right, with St. James flanked by guards standing before him. Behind them a triumphal arch. Bernard Shaw toured northern Italy (Milan, Verona, Venice, Padua, Mantua, and Pavia) during September 1891 with the Art Workers’ Guild. Shaw admired Mantegna’s work – in the preface to his novel The Irrational Knot, he explains that he enjoyed seeing work by Mantegna at Hampton Court Palace (The Triumphs of Caesar).
