Summary
A photograph of the Scottish novelist and dramatist Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937), by the photographer George Charles Beresford (1864-1938), taken in 1902. Photographed from half-right against dark ground. Wearing a shirt, wing collar and dark tie. Brown passe partout, glazed. Barrie was a neighbour of the Shaws at Adelphi Terrace (their London flat) for many years. He is best known as the author of Peter Pan (1904). Barrie was particularly close to Charlotte Shaw. Marks and inscription: Below photograph - Signature "G. C. Beresford" and hand written inscription "To Mrs. Bernard Shaw from J. M. Barrie."
