Summary
A photograph of Shaw aged 94 in July 1950, by Allan G. Chappelow. Shaw stands on path at left of veranda, left foot on step, stick in right hand, looking fiercely ahead. Chappelow published this photograph of Shaw in his book Shaw the Villager and Human Being (1961), where he claimed it was “the last action photograph of Bernard Shaw”. Shaw bequest. Handwritten in black on mount below photo; at left "Photograph by;" and at right "Allan G. Chappelow." In centre; " "THE CHUCKER-OUT" / (Shaw's own Title) / G.B.S. - July 1950 - AET 94." Black wood frame, white mount, glazed.A copy of this photograph was later donated by Alice Laden (Shaw’s housekeeper) in 1980 (1274637.2).
Provenance
The Shaw Collection. The house and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by George Bernard Shaw in 1950, together with Shaw's photographic archive.
