Summary
A pair of ebony, ebonised, brass and pewter inlaid tortoiseshell and ormolu mounted pedestals, after designs by Andre-Charles Boulle (Paris, 1642-1732) French, circa 1840. Each with a stepped top and moulded edge above a waisted frieze and square section tapering body, raised on a stepped plinth with a shaped apron and bracket feet. The whole inlaid with brass and pewter and tortoiseshell scroll work and with applied cast mounts of scrolls and floral detail. The design of this type of furniture is often referred to as 'Boule work' after the Parisian master, and was copied from the end of the 17th century through to the end of the 19th century in many forms and qualities. The craftsmanship on this particular pair is excellent which points to a date somewhere around the middle years of the 19th century. This group of furniture can be difficult to dale accurately but as a general rule of thumb the quality tends to lessen the later a piece is produced in the 19th century.
