Full description
Captain The Hon Ronald Fulke Greville died on 5th April from pneumonia following an operation on 31st March for cancer of the larynx. This letter was sent to his widow, Margaret Greville. Written on headed writing paper with family crest and 34, Bould'Maillot, Neuilly Date April 7th 1908 written in ink. Dear Mrs Greville, I cannot tell you how deeply my wife and I feel the great bereavement that has befallen you. Pray pardon my intruding at such a moment but I cannot keep silence. King good friends you both were, and we are but two in hundreds who felt the greatest regards for your dear husband. Be assured of sincerest sympathy and the inexpressible sorrow we feel. Most sincerely yours, Ames van Wart. Ames was wealthly American sculptor. Born in New York, his family moved to Paris. He studied in Florence. In 1969 he married Caroline Owen. His sculptures were widely exhibited. He returned to Europe in 1872 and had a house in London at 2, South St. Park Lane. He continued to sculpt but did not need commissions as he was so wealthy. Caroline died in 1893. He later remarried and made his home at address on this letter.
