Full description
Captain Stracey is in full uniform for the Scots Guards. Claud Stracey and 1893 are written at the top of the card. At the top on the reverse is written: 'To Mrs McEwan, the best + kindest of friends.' Helen Mc Ewa, née Anderson was Margaret Greville's mother. Claud was educated at Eton College and then attended Trinity College Cambridge from 1873. In 1876 Claud was a Lieutenant in the 9th Foot, Manchester Regiment becoming Captain in 1885. He transferred to the Scots Guards in 1887, fighting in the Egyptian Campaign before retiring in 1896. In 1897 Claud married Alice Maud Paget, daughter of General Lord Alfred Paget, whose photograph is in the Collection NT 1246689. The Pagets were friends of William and Helen McEwan and Margaret Greville staying at Polesden Lacey many times. Claude also stayed at Polesden in 1908 and 1913.
