Summary
Tapestry, wool and silk, 5 warps per cm, Soldier on Horseback, Flemish, possibly Oudenaarde, c. 1560-1580. A soldier wearing a Roman tunic, a plumed helmet and a blue cloak rides a light brown horse with a striped caparison. The soldier turns to speak to a man on foot behind him who wears armour and a helmet and carries a shield. Ahead of the horseman a semi-naked youth blows a large curved horn. The tapestry has been cut from a larger panel. There are no borders but a striped galloon has been applied round all four edges. There are a number of tapestry patches in the lower part of the panel. The tapestry previously hung on the staircase at Polesden Lacey. (Helen Wyld, 2012)
