Summary
Sculpture, white marble, Capital, reused as a wellhead, carved in relief on all four faces, Italian (Venetian) School. Large white marble Venetian well head. Limestone capital, reused as a wellhead, carved in relief on all four faces. The decoration consists of acanthus-scrolls, inhabited by small-scale animals; a lion, a monkey, two rodents and two dog-like creatures. On two sides, there is a chalice, sprouting more acanthus leaves, one with a stem topped by a pine-cone and a superimposed interwoven cable knot.
Provenance
acquired, after 1906, by the Hon. Mrs Ronald Greville, who bequeathed Polesden Lcaey to the National Trust (1942)
