Full description
A representation in marble of a Roman peasant girl in costume of the classical style. She is wearing a tunic and a fringed scarf folded back over her head. Her hair is loose and cascades over her shoulders. She has a beaded necklace from which hangs a pendant hangs over the gently gathered neck of her tunic. Hutchinson studied in Rome in 1860 and he was inspired to create many sculptures of women and girls which display qualities of pureness and charm. The National Gallery of Scotland has a ''Pasquccia'. (NG571) Pasquccia was exhibited at Royal Academy, London, in 1864 (cat.no. 980) and the Royal Scottish Academy, in 1870 (cat. no. 942) and 1880 (cat. no. 354). Hutchinson made several of these busts, the Polesden Psquccia has her head more raised than the bust at the SNG. William McEwan would probably have bought this sculpture from an exhibition. Signed J. HUTCHISON R.S.A. EDINr 1870.
Provenance
The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943. This item found on the record for Polesden Lacey Entrance Hall, page 1.
