Summary
Marble, Pasquccia, by John Hutchison (Edinburgh 1833 - Edinburgh 1910), signed and dated 1870. A marble bust of a girl, veiled, with long hair, wearing a ruched square-necked tunic with necklace and medallion. Signed J. HUTCHISON R.S.A. EDINr 1870. On a rectangular marble socle and cylindrical black marble plinth. Hutchison exhibited 'Pasquccia', an idealised bust of a 'Contadina' (an Italian country girl or woman), at the Royal Academy, London, in 1864 (no. 980) and later, at the Royal Scottish Academy, in 1870 (no. 942; now National Galleries of Scotland, NG 571). A later model was shown in 1880 (no. 354). NT 1246896, signed and dated 1869, may be another version of Hutchison's Pasquccia model. Trained in Rome, this is one of several idealised subjects (rustics, dancing girls, mothers) inspired by Hutchison's time Italy.
