Summary
Marble, A Veiled Woman, by John Hutchison (Edinburgh 1833 - Edinburgh 1910), signed and dated 1869. A marble bust a young woman, veiled, head raised to left, wearing a tunic. Signed J. HUTCHISON R.S.A. EDINr 1869. On a circular marble socle and cylindrical black marble plinth. The subject is possibly Geneviève, whom Hutchison depicted in 1869 and exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy the same year (no. 999), or, given its similarities with NT 1246897, an Italian countrywoman, and a version of the model known as 'Pasquccia' (the 'Roman Contadina' or peasant woman). Trained in Rome, in addition to portraiture Hutchison is known for depictions of idealised Italian rustics, dancing girls, mothers etc., inspired by his time Italy.
Provenance
