Full description
Head and shoulders studio portrait of the Grand Duchess wearing a hat, a lacy dress with a dark over bodice. Large pearl earrings and a pearl necklace. Signed Marie 1907 Marie was married to Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia and lived at Vladimir Palace on the banks of the Neva River in St Petersburg. Marie established a reputation as being one of the best hostesses in the capital and they formed an alternative court in the later years of the reign of the Tsar. The Grand Duchess was the last of the Romanovs to escape from revolutionary Russia; in 1918 she fled to her villa in Paris (now the Hotel la Souveraine) and she died there on 6 September 1920.
