Full description
In this studio portrait Lieut. Lowes is hatless but wearing the uniform of 12th Durham Light Infantry. Inscribed, signed and dated: In memory of some very happy days at Polesden Lacey. J H Lowes 17.4.17. In very faint writing, on the photograph, under the image on the left is written: Mary Edis, Farnham. Her full name was Mary Olive Edis (1876 - 1955). She became the official war artist and photographer during WW1, 1918 - 1919. The IWM has a collection of her work. Lieut. Lowes signed the Visitor Book at Polesden Lacey, as did other convalescing officers during WW1: J H Lowes, Newbiggin by Sea, Northumberland. Newbiggin by Sea was where Joseph was born. He was convalescing at Polesden in 1916. He retuned to the services, as a Major he was, later, in charge of officer training at Sandhurst, Berkshire.
