Full description
Sir Squire Bancroft, born in 1841 in Rotherhithe, London, married the actress Marie Effie Wilton in December 1867. The Bancrofts became joint actor managers of The Prince of Wales Theatre, London, moving to the Haymarket in 1879. They were responsible for social reforms increasing pay and improving working conditions for actors. Their reforms made the theatre world more respectable and acting an acceptable profession. Bancroft was chairman of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
