Full description
The Maharaja visited Polesden Lacey and Charles Street several times between 1922 and 1932. Like Margaret Greville he had a Hospital for Officers during WW1, in his country estate house in Staines. Margaret Greville visited him in Bikaner in 1921. Born in 1872 Sir Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji, Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar, was educated at Cambridge University. He joined the Sussex cricket team in 1895 as well as playing for England in Test matches, becoming the first Indian to do so. He became the Maharajah of Nawanagar in 1907 and set about reforming the state by building roads, railways and irrigation works. During World War I he served in the British army and attained the rank of Colonel.
